Former German Chancellor Merkel: The EU should not fear U.S. tariffs
ChainCatcher news, according to CCTV News, former German Chancellor Merkel, attending an event in Athens, Greece, on July 2 local time, stated that if the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration in the United States lead American citizens to pay more for goods, then Trump will also be affected.
Merkel stated that the EU must stand united and should not be afraid when Trump imposes more tariffs on the EU, but should retaliate with its own tariffs. The EU must negotiate with the United States to resolve the tariff issue. U.S. President Trump has threatened that if there is no breakthrough in U.S.-EU trade negotiations by July 9, he will impose a 50% tariff on EU goods.
Currently, the U.S. imposes a 50% tariff on EU steel and aluminum products, a 25% tariff on the automotive sector, and a 10% baseline tariff on almost all other goods.
